The best Hague coffee shops of the moment

The tastiest cup of coffee? At Us In The Residence highlights the four nicest 'specialty coffee' hotspots in The Hague right now.

Although there is nothing wrong with the old, familiar Haagse bakkie pleur, specialty coffee hotspots are springing up like mushrooms. Our six favourites can be found here:

#1 DuckRabbit Coffee Brewers

DuckRabbit opened its doors on Molenstraat in March. Owner Wesley Piket reminds us that it is not a lunchroom like Juni and Coco that were previously there. The main focus here is on specialty coffees and tea. Coffee beans are sourced from anywhere and everywhere. "Now I have supplies from Colombia, Panama, Peru and Brazil. It depends a bit on the harvest. Soon I expect something from Indonesia and Kenya."

#2 JoeJoe Specialty Coffeebar

At number 4 Brouwersgracht, where the firm Reuser & Smulder sold coffee and tea in 1917, owner Stefan Coster opened a coffee bar cum lunchroom in June: JoeJoe Specialty Coffeebar. As if it was meant to be: thanks to JoeJoe, it smells like coffee again in a long time. The name JoeJoe means nothing. "Well, nothing. When I say hello to someone, I often say, 'Joe!' That's where it comes from," says owner Stefan.

#3 TigerShark Coffee

If you live in Scheveningen, this gem probably won't have escaped your notice. For non-Scheveningers: this laid-back establishment is definitely worth a visit! In addition to the relaxing surf vibe, there is a TigerShark Coffee above all, an us-versus-them atmosphere. And it shows, because everyone who walks in chats with owner Vinnie and with each other. Settle down on one of the soft sofas at the back of the shop, or enjoy the sun on the small but cosy terrace on Badhuisstraat.

#4 Single Estate Coffee Roasters

At Single Estate Coffee Roasters on Piet Heinstraat, they know everything, but really everything, about roasting and brewing the perfect cup of coffee. Come here for special coffees roasted in-house, such as Ethiopian coffee with flavours of jasmine and orange. The authentic premises look sleek thanks to a long, black bar and industrial furnishings. Here, you can even take a seat at the bar to socialise with the baristas.

#5 Ief & Ido

An 'old' friend in a new location. Since 2018, Ief van Zwet and Ido van der Wal have been jointly roasting coffee in an old industrial building in The Hague Zuidwest. Here, the two produce their own single origins - coffees from specific farmers or cooperatives. Last year, they finally found a place to open their own espresso bar. On Prinsestraat in the city centre, you can now visit to taste the entire range. Each shot from the espresso machine is ground separately for you. Fresher than fresh! Ief & Ido is also a shop where you can go for all your coffee supplies.

#6 Brute Beans

Brutal Beans is Jop Bröcker's coffee roastery on Zodiakplein. He is happy to tell you about the organic beans he gets mainly from distant forests and what sustainable coffee production really looks like. He sends the coffee by post. Besides drinking coffee, this new espresso bar also serves lunch and workshops.
