6 x chocolate in The Hague
Chocolate is one of life's great pleasures that you should really enjoy from time to time. Luckily, there are numerous places in The Hague where you can get your hands on this delicious treat. Here are five of the very best places to indulge in artisan chocolate:
#1 Hop & Stork
A historic building in the Passage, spread over two floors, houses chocolate studio, shop and tasting room Hop & Stork. They also roast their own coffee on site. The chocolate atelier is completely open, so while sipping a creamy cappuccino, you can see exactly how all the chocolate delicacies are prepared. And treats, they have plenty of them. Perhaps you know Hops & Stork also from their 'viral' Dubai bar that was seen on socials all over the world overnight. For those who missed the hype anyway: influencers break the famous bar in half, after which a filling of green, creamy pistachio spills out of the chocolate. So that's going to be tasting.
📍 Passage 82
#2 Pâtisserie Chocolaterie Jarreau
In chic Benoordenhout, a stone's throw from the royal palace Huis ten Bosch, you will find Pâtisserie Chocolaterie Jarreau. Just seeing the shop window makes your mouth water. From homemade chocolates and macarons to artful cakes and friandises. Not for nothing has Jarreau won several awards in the past for his sweet treats.
📍 Van Hoytemastraat 42

#3 Petit by Sam
After a successful business in Amsterdam, founder Sam Raheja moved to The Hague. Her eye fell on an empty building in Prins Hendrikstraat, which she transformed into a bakery with gluten-free and vegan patisserie. The name Petit by Sam says it all: most of the cakes are small. Not big pieces of whipped cream cake, but small, delicate pastries. Our favourite? The 'PB lovers', made with peanut butter, chocolate and dates. Yum.
📍 Prince Henry Street 106
#4 ADEA Chocolate
At ADEA Chocolate, on the corner of Laan van Meerdervoort and Reinkenstraat, you look straight from the shop into the studio. Here, a former lawyer from New York lovingly makes fresh chocolates by hand every day. Tlalit Packer, owner of this artisan chocolate atelier, also makes personalised chocolates with your own logo or photo on them for customers, employees or special occasions on request. "The secret to a good bonbon is a thin exterior and a hefty filling," she reveals. Good to know: Tlalit incorporates significantly less oils in its chocolates, which means its chocolate is mostly gluten-free.
📍 Laan van Meerdervoort 191
#5 De Graaff Chocolate
Pastry chef Tara van Horssen gained experience at Patisserie Holtkamp and master pastry chef Hidde den Brabander. She now works with her brother and mother for family business The Graaff, where she can unleash all her creativity. At Noordeinde, the twenty-something makes chocolates prepared according to a recipe dating back to 1928. You can choose from more than 30 flavours, including sea buckthorn, Hague hops and chocolate with lavender salt.
📍 Noordeinde 154
#6 Bonbon atelier Westerbeek
Eat the tastiest demi tranche d'orange - a candied orange slice half dipped in dark chocolate - at the artisanal Bonbon atelier Westerbeek By Nico Fernandes in the Statenkwartier. Forty years ago, he came to The Hague from Venlo to learn the trade from Guus Westerbeek. After initial suspicion from his teacher, Fernandes was eventually offered the business. The chocolate with which chocolatier Fernandes makes chocolates comes from Belgian producer Callebaut, which he says is the best to work with. "The quality is always stable and the price per box is not ridiculously high," he says.
