Voco, perhaps The Hague's most sustainable hotel
The former bank building on Kneuterdijk has been transformed into a contemporary four-star hotel with an eye for the environment. And not just for tourists: locals are also welcome in the restaurant, cocktail bar or terrace.
Ef we want to use the bikes. No way, instead we come to the Voco hotel with our own bikes. Tourist in our own city. In recent years, we visited many hotels in The Hague, each with its own signature.
You don't get sugar sachets with your coffee but a pot on the table
Voco, at Kneuterdijk 8, is perhaps the most sustainable hotel in town. To name a few: the straws in Botanica restaurant are made of straw, the clothes hangers are made of recycled materials and you don't get sugar sachets with your coffee but a jar on the table. At the restaurant, they make bread pudding from old bread.
Before you step inside the hotel, you should really take a look at that imposing sand-coloured natural stone façade. Besides, it is a place with a long history. Liberal politician Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp convinced the Prince of Orange, William Frederick of Orange-Nassau, to return to the Netherlands after the fall of French rule in 1813 precisely here.
A memento of those banking days is the large vault at the bottom of steampunk bar Ultramarine.
In 1923, the house was replaced by a bank building for the Rotterdamsche Bankvereeniging, a forerunner of the ABN AMRO Bank. A memento of those banking days is the large vault at the bottom of steampunk bar Ultramarijn. This large, tastefully designed bar mixes dark blue tones with maritime elements. Tonight, we will have a cocktail here. But first, see the room!

Of the 204 rooms, 16 are suites. Our suite overlooks the Kneuterdijk. Hello Tapisco! Just checking the windows: they can be ajar. Always nice. We were told that the duvet is made of recycled PET bottles.

Sounds a bit crazy, but it feels soft. In the spacious bathroom, where you can easily shower for two, hang refillable bottles from natural cosmetics brand Antipodes. Nice too that big suitcase that serves as a closet. Everything is in calm, stylish colours: white, brown, blue, here and there a touch of gold.

Voco The Hague is the new brand of IHG Hotels & Resorts, one of the largest hotel companies worldwide. IHG® also includes boutique hotel Indigo on Noordeinde and Staybridges' short-stay suites on Lange Vijverberg. Each Voco has its own identity; here, for instance, guests receive a Hague welcome package with a breastplate of Hague hops, lavender and Hague honey.

In Botanica, the emphasis is on vegetable dishes.
We prepare for dinner at Botanica restaurant. First, we walk up to the terrace behind. A hidden gem. What peace and quiet so right in the centre. Once in our spot, we check out the menu, also very sustainable. The emphasis is on vegetable dishes, such as a juicy roasted aubergine with hazelnuts and salty spinach salad with plenty of hollandaise sauce.

Steampunk bar Ultramarine
You can also just opt for fish or meat if you like. Then it's time for Ultramarine, which has a mix of hotel guests and locals. Cocktails fly across the bar. Nice when you can just hit the lift button afterwards instead of driving home.
In the morning we sit down to an 'English breakfast'
In the morning, we sit down to an 'English breakfast': scrambled eggs, tomatoes, sausages and bacon. More goodies: croissants and chocolate rolls. Prefer something more responsible? They also have smoothies, fresh fruit, yoghurt.

Voco The Hague has an extensive breakfast buffet
There is a coffee machine, but if you look sweetly at the staff, they are more than willing to make you a cappuccino. What luxury, what a fine hotel. Oh yes, as locals we would almost forget to mention it, but Voco The Hague is located right in the city centre. Within five minutes you walk to the Hofvijver, the Denneweg and Noordeinde. Ideal for a city trip!
