The Hague's best tips from the editors: Brian Mul

The editors of Bij Ons In De Residentie talk about hotspots, guilty pleasures and special shops in The Hague. This week's tips from photographer Brian Mul.

Favourite restaurant

In my search for a cuisine that reflects what I know from my Thai roots, I ended up at 'Thai Fresh' in Voorburg. It is a place with a warm welcome and authentic flavours that make me feel at home.

Thai food in Voorburg

A table full of dishes at Thai Fresh

The chefs at Thai Fresh manage to bring Thai cuisine to life with dishes that are both familiar and innovative. The prick peacock, for example, with its spicy depth and customisable choice of meat, is a must for those who dare to experiment within the traditions of Thai flavour culture.

It is the combination of cordial service and dishes with character that makes Thai Fresh a place where my half-Thai background comes into its own. Every visit is a reimagining of Thailand's hospitality and culinary heritage.

Guilty pleasure

Coastal Gin

Holiday in your own city

The Black Pad: sun, sea and sand. After a morning in the green wilderness, it's time for sun and sea at the Zwarte Pad in Scheveningen. This part of the beach is known for its relaxed atmosphere and cosy beach bars. It is the perfect place to continue the day, whether you want to sunbathe, take a dip in the waves or enjoy a snack and drink overlooking the setting sun.

By holidaying in your own city, you discover the rich diversity that lies on your doorstep. The combination of peaceful nature and lively beach life offers the best of both worlds and reminds us that we don't always have to go far away to escape the daily routine.

Golden tip

As photographer I have often seen The Hague when the city is bathed in gold during the 'Golden Hour'. This is the time just before the sun sets, when everything turns a golden colour and the city becomes even more beautiful. The most beautiful moment? At the beach, when the sun paints the sky in warm colours and makes the water sparkle. The atmosphere is perfect then: a little romantic and very special.

So, whether you live in The Hague or are visiting, try to experience this magical hour. It's a simple but beautiful moment you don't want to miss.

Hague nature

For a quiet walk, Westduinpark in The Hague is my top choice. Away from the city, surrounded by dunes and nature, it is the ideal place to relax.
