At Skin+Surgery, cosmetic doctors don't just look at the outside

A lady who had lost 25 kilos, after which the skin had started drooping, received a full facelift at Skin+Surgery Clinics. She was radiant again. "After a treatment, people are different persons," she says.
Bhe Skin+Surgery, a cosmetic clinic specialising in injectables, skin enhancement and cosmetic surgery, doctors don't just look at the outside. The inside has to be right too. "Otherwise, you still won't feel beautiful," says Thanya Tha-In, co-owner and cosmetic surgeon.

Attention to people is important. "We therefore ask why someone chooses to undergo surgery. If you look in the mirror more than 30 times a day or you are afraid to go somewhere because you are ashamed of your appearance, it might be a good idea to talk to our inner-beauty coach."
'There is no clear dividing line between inner and outer'
Skin+Surgery is a clinic that operates 'from the heart', she continues. "As a doctor, you build a relationship with your client and see where else you can help. Then the focus at the intake interview might be on that frown wrinkle, for example, but it turns out there is much more going on in the background: illness or a divorce. There is no clear dividing line between inner and outer appearance. They flow into each other."
Beauty ideal
That wrinkle may be deep, but the "inner beauty", as they call it at the clinic, goes "much deeper". It is not about conforming to the general ideal of beauty, the doctor believes. "What does matter is that you can be proud of who you are, that the client looks the way they feel again."
Supplements
To help customers with this, there is also a complementary offer, such as a vitamin infusion. Co-owner and business director Dennis Damen: "Healthy living is our passion. We like to impart that to the people who come here." To be healthy, Tha-In adds, is "to feel very good". "Of course, we don't have a magic wand to make that happen overnight, but we do think along with you." Damen: "For example, supplements can make your skin stronger from the inside out. Combined with a high-quality serum, you start to glow more."
Skin+Surgery selects its staff on their mindset: they must have a positive outlook on life and offer clients personal attention. In doing so, they must excel in the field. Damen: "You can have completed a medical degree, but that alone is not enough." Tha-In: "If people decide to have something done to their appearance, which is quite a step for some, the treatment has to be really good."
Certified cosmetic doctor
Thanya Tha-In was always a high-flyer himself. The surgeon and certified cosmetic doctor graduated cum laude in medicine. In hospital, she missed connecting with people. Take eyelid surgery. "In the hospital, they often look purely functional and not at the aesthetics of the face. There is excess skin and it has to go. It's a totally different experience from undergoing the same procedure in a private clinic. If people decide to have something done to their appearance, the treatment has to be really good."

And Tha-In - kind, round face, gorgeous, flawless skin - loves beautiful. And people. She laughs: "A lady came here who had lost 25 kilos. She felt good, but was not happy with her skin. It had started to droop. After a full face and neck lift, she was completely radiant. She was a singer and could now wear beautiful earrings again. Great."
They are sometimes relatively minor treatments clients undergo, she explains, such as an eyelid correction, but the effect is great. "Afterwards, they are a different person, the overall look changes," she says.
The surgeon is delighted by symmetry and beauty. "I have an eye for that, for the artistic part of the work. I can work very delicately."

Tha-In and entrepreneur Damen set up their cosmetic clinic together in 2015. There are now branches in the Bloemenbuurt area of The Hague and in Bergschenhoek, and the duo recently opened a fourth branch in Utrecht. "We are growing, mainly through word-of-mouth advertising," says Tha-In. Tha-In is responsible for the medical organisation, Damen deals with the business. Tha-In: "Together, we are balanced."

The company's three pillars are surgery, injectables (botox/fillers) and skin improvement with, for example, a hydra facial. Together, these ensure optimal results. It is a cross-pollination, says Tha-In. "Say someone has had an eyelid correction, which makes the frown wrinkle more noticeable, we can solve that nicely with a complementary botox treatment. Often people don't come with just one problem."

Damen: "It's a shame that when that frown line is gone, the skin still looks dull. If you have painted one wall, the rest also stands out."
