Nico McGough tips: 5 x spring wines
'Wine legend' Nico McGough of Bosman Wijnkopers owes his unique collection to importing sustainably working winemakers. McGough's 45-plus years of wine experience is now flowing your way via his creative pen.
Wat are the wine trends of the moment? Nico McGough of Bosman Wine Purchasers sees an increase in the quality of wines served at home. "The explanation was the same everywhere: 'We are used to ordering up to 50 euros a bottle in the on-trade, so we can now increase the budget privately as well.'" And we have noticed that at the counter and online.
'Which wine remained wildly popular? Rosé!'
Unthinkable
Except for the brief spell of snow, the season could not exactly be called wintery and it showed in the glass, as which wine remained wildly popular? Rosé! And that was unthinkable just a few years ago. The first early rays of sunshine this year reinforced that image and we had to rush fresh rosés from the wine countries.
'At least with us, the standardised 'Rioja at 5.95' seems to be a thing of the past'
Unstoppable
Another notable trend at Bosman Wijnkopers is the strong demand for quality wines from Spain. At least with us, the customary 5.95 Rioja seems to be a thing of the past and its place has been taken by quality wines from other Spanish regions, which cost three or four times as much. La Mancha, for example, but even more impressively, the eminent wines of HABLA from Extremadura. In all categories, the demand for organic or biodynamic wine is unstoppable.

De Kleine Schorre
And then there is news from home. Dutch wines experienced a top year and many a winery is already completely sold out for 2021. "If you haven't placed a reservation with us, there will be no wine this year either," the owner of De Kleine Schorre informed us. Of course we do have a large reservation there and we are expanding our Dutch offer, now also with red wines from Dutch soil.
Five tips from Bosman Wijnkopers
It is spring now, with gently rising temperatures, fresh sunshine, so light dishes following hearty winter fare. This time of year calls for similar light, elegant wines. Mostly white, but beautiful rosé is also allowed. Five tips to be seen with.
1. Cueva del Chamán Verdejo Blanco 2020
€ 9,95
From the warm south of Spain comes this blisteringly fresh creation from 100% verdejo grapes. It's finally a verdejo that doesn't smell or taste like grapefruit peel, but smells elegantly of spring flowers. On the palate beautifully dry, spotless, invigorating and fresh. By far the best verdejo we have ever seen from this organic winery.
2. DomPeynac Chardonnay Réserve 2020
€ 9,95
Even at the first sip you imagine yourself on the Côtes de Beaune, Meursault? Or would it be Puligny after all? None of that - this is the masterfully good Languedoc Chardonnay that the Volkskrant immediately gave a fat 9 to. Intense fragrance of ripe yellow fruit with clear oak undertones. In the mouth full, creamy with lovely freshness and civilised acidity, at the same time 'nice and fat'. Unprecedented quality for the money!
3. Iuventus 'Gemischter Satz' 2020
€ 11,95
Butterfly Light is the 2020 Gemischter Satz. At just 10% alcohol, it's an organic lightweight, a spring breeze in the glass. Wonderful refinement, fresh notes and not a trace of wood. Hubrecht Duijker doesn't call this type of wine 'bottled mountain air' for nothing, and there's not a word of Russian in there. Dry, juicy, subdued, elegant.
4. Pinot Grigio delle Venezie 2020
litre €11.95
From the easternmost part of Veneto, close to Venice, stands the Giol family estate. The Carraro family is now represented by the intelligent Vittorio, son of the house. Besides being a gifted winemaker, he is also a hygiene freak. This is also evident in his organic wines; splash and splash clean they are. Soft, accessible, dry and oh so clean. A hoot of a price, moreover, and the open litre bottle stays pico bello for a week in the fridge.
5. Jas d'Esclans Cru Classé Rosé 2020
€ 18,95
There are only a handful of vineyards left in Provence that can carry the Cru Classé designation. Jas d'Esclans is one of them. The Wulf family makes unprecedented, organic Provence Rosé there. For this pale-coloured beauty, they use five different grape varieties, all blue in colour. Keeping the skins in contact with the grape juice for only a very short time creates this bright, sparkling pink wine. It doesn't get much better than this out there in sunny Provence.
All wines are available at the shop at Frederik Hendriklaan 251, as well as online at www.bosmanwijnkopers.nl
