Around the corner from us: Scheveningen
At the beginning of this month, we kicked off BOIDR's new series 'Bij Ons Om De Hoek' with our favourite spots in Duinoord. In this edition, editor Meike takes you to the pearl of the Dutch coast: Scheveningen. This bustling seaside resort continues to develop and, apart from the beach and the sea, now has plenty of fine spots worth naming. So, curious about local tips? You can read them here!
W ann whenever you think of Scheveningen, images of its famous pier, Ferris wheel, beaches and crowds of tourists often flash by. But those who seek, will find. In fact, there are plenty of places in our coastal town that are more than worth exploring.
Norvolk
On the south side of Scheveningen lurks such a surprising place. Norvolk, located in the harbour on the former Norfolk site, is a Scandinavian bakery café with already famous baked goods by owner Carla Visch. Here, it's all about quality and conviviality. You can enjoy specialities like cinnamon buns, freshly baked breads and fika, a tasty tasting of small treats. Whether you come early in the morning for a strong cup of coffee, settle down for a cosy lunch, or just want to relax with a sun-drenched view of the harbour from the terrace, Norvolk has something for every moment of the day.
't Pompke
Tucked away on the edge of the Scheveningen forest is the cosy and atmospheric Koffiehuis 't Pompke. This place is like a resting point on your route to or from the beach, where you can refuel after a bike ride along the coast. Here you can enjoy delicious coffee or refreshing organic juices, accompanied by homemade sweet treats. For a hearty appetite, there are various sandwiches, quiches, soups and salads to choose from.
Fish shop De Lange
De Lange is best known to insiders. In a small side street of Keizerstraat, you will find the áller tastiest herring in Scheveningen. And believe me, I have tried many. You will recognise the shop by the colourful murals of, yes, herring-eating people. Every morning De Lange's go to the fish market to stock up early and fresh. And you can taste that.
Mackerel fishing
To stay in the fishing theme for a while, although this is a piece about Scheveningen, I'd like to tip you off to a salty adventure you really must have tried once. It takes a little getting up early, a small challenge if you suffer from seasickness, but then you have an authentic Scheveningen experience: mackerel fishing. In the period from mid-May to the end of September, mackerel swim through the water in large numbers. Together with a seasoned sailor and experienced fishermen, you go out to sea early (08:00) to fish those silver swimmers out of the water. And nay, I know that fishing may not be the sexiest activity - but you just have to have tried this one once.
Café Constant
Then on to the favourite within the favourites list. In 2020, Café Constant opened its doors on Stevinstraat and since then I, and the rest of Scheveningen, haven't been away. The sunny terrace is always full of local people, the service fast, attentive and cosy and the food is truly delicious. The dishes hover somewhere between Parisian bistro and culinary café. My favourites? The octopus with ndujabutter and the chicken leg with chilli macadamia and confit garlic. The menu changes regularly so should you want to try these gems you should visit soon. And that's no punishment. Go!

Restaurant Cru
Meat lover? Then you've probably heard of CRU on Badhuisstraat. If not? Then I heartily recommend you pay it a visit. After all, besides countless barber shops, bicycle shops and kebab shops (well), Badhuisstraat also has this hidden hotspot. Owner Alan de Vries has been supplying game, poultry and other quality meat to the hospitality industry in The Hague since 2025 and started his own restaurant in 2019. From the restaurant, you look straight into the kitchen, where you can see freshly shot game hanging. The meat, and other dishes, are top quality and the wine list is full of classics.
LIVEPT
If you have tried all of the above locations and are ready for a bit more sporty? Then drop by LIVEPT in Scheveningen harbour (near Norvolk!). A fine, spacious gym with interested, skilled (personal) trainers. You will also find three other places where you can train: in Wassenaar, at Millers Beach in Kijkduin and at the Beach Stadium in Scheveningen. But their location in the harbour remains a favourite.
