Anna Tump's dental centre was bursting at the seams in a short time. That is why she recently opened a second practice in De Zuid in Scheveningen. "What we do is not only medically good, also aesthetic," she says.
Designer furniture and tufts of dune grass fill the immaculate white space. Hip eigthies music in the background and subtle lighting effects create the relaxed atmosphere. No, this is not a wellness resort or fancy beach club. This is Anna Tump's state-of-the-art dental centre. This branch in De Zuid, with beautiful views of the Third Harbour, is already her second. "Five years ago, I started for myself here around the corner on Kranenburgweg. All by myself, with zero patients. A leap of faith," Tump looks back as she smiles exposing her - how could it be otherwise - glowing business cards. "In no time we were full with our now 13-member team. So the choice was simple: stop patients or expand."
'I started all by myself, with zero patients'
The new practice will allow Tump to double its capacity to about six thousand patients. "Here we now have two of the three rooms in use; we are still urgently looking for reinforcements," the dentist says mildly concerned. "The funny thing is that I started in this neighbourhood back then because I thought: there is plenty of construction going on here, work is bound to result from that. Now, nota bene, half of the houses and flats have yet to be completed! Our patients come from all over The Hague and even abroad: the US, England, France..." What is the secret behind that success? "With us, you are not a number, we really know who you are. And what we do is not only medically good, also aesthetically. Such an experience goes from mouth to mouth."
Anna Tump
Those who choose one of Anna Tump's dentists get a tailor-made care plan. "At the intake, we first go through your past history with you in detail, what state your teeth are in at that moment and what wishes you have. That forms the starting point to arrive at the most reliable and beautiful teeth possible," Tump explains. To do this, the professionals have a large arsenal of tools and equipment at their disposal. "With the latest scanners and innovative techniques, we have the top of what is possible in the dental field. We do almost everything: crowns, bridgework, bleaching, veneers, you name it. Only for some implants do we still refer to the implantologist."
'With us you are not a number, we really know who you are'
One of Tump's unique selling points are the virtually invisible braces from US-based Invisalign. "To become an exclusive provider, I took an internal training course there," she says. "It's a fantastic product, the competition doesn't match it. And I speak from my own experience, because although I had braces once before, over time I saw from the scans of my own teeth that they could be a bit straighter. Before I knew it, I was walking with it myself." Tump starts to chuckle. "In corona time, I wore a mouth guard constantly, so there were new patients who had never seen my mouth before. When I had them back in the chair after the corona period, they said, 'What beautiful teeth you actually have yourself, Anna!'"
Facings
The importance of having nice teeth is increasing, according to the dentist, although she believes caution is needed. "There are even management books these days that advise having your teeth taken care of if you want to make a career!", exclaims Tump in amazement. "Young people in particular are having more and more work done on their appearance - and thus their teeth. And I hear real horror stories about that from time to time. Especially when it comes to veneers. Some dentists completely grind away cool teeth for it, with all the consequences, such as damaged nerves. In contrast, we only perform customised work; with thinner veneers, for example, you hardly need to grind at all, and often you can already achieve the desired effect with braces."
'We only perform customisation'
"Let's take a walk around," suggests Tump, who was closely involved in designing the practice. We start in the cleaning corner, where there is a high designer sink for adults and a low one for the brood. She points to the pearl-coated tile wall. "We also have those at the other location. With details like that, we like to exude unity. Beautiful isn't it! I picked it myself." In one of the spotless treatment rooms, the practice's logo shines softly through a cabinet door. "Well, I do get confronted with my own name too often on a working day," she sighs. "The other day, someone remarked: 'Oh, is there a dentist called Anna Tump, too? I thought it was a brand name.'"
Wish list
Although we encounter the most high-tech instruments in the rooms and behind the scenes, not everything on the perfectionist Tump's wish list has been ticked off yet. "I would also like to have a CBCT scanner to take 3D X-rays with, and a treatment microscope with which we can perform root canal treatments even more precisely. But that will all come with the next investment." Suddenly, someone stands in the waiting room with a package. After a brief chat with the man, Tump returns. "That was a neighbour from the complex. I immediately invited him to come and have a look.
'This step tastes like more'
Anna, Madelon, Belén: remarkably, only women work at Anna Tump. "That is not a deliberate choice, but in the meantime we do wonder if another man would fit into our team," confesses Tump. "We really like working together, we also all rotate at both locations to make sure we remain one and the same practice together. And then during breaks we sometimes have conversations that a man will probably be surprised by..." Still, the entrepreneur dreams of a third location. "This step sometimes tastes like more. We already had 'the harbour', we now also have 'the beach', how nice would it be if we could conquer 'the city' as well?"
