At Us In The Residence visited the inspired Freek Fidder (38), who knows better than anyone what it is like to work in a family business. He is the third generation of an entrepreneurial family specialising in beds and textiles. "For a long time, I had the dream of running a Hästens store to open; it's a beautiful brand."

When Roos Ouderdorp (31) five years ago Avenir Realty started, she employed one employee, now she works with a team of six in the beautiful office building on the corner Anna Paulownastraat/Laan van Meerdervoort. The reason for the success? "Customers appreciate our personal service," she says.

No matter how wretched the state of a property, whoever the lords of Maasstede knows that besides developing new buildings, they also beautifully refurbish national monuments. Their latest project: 44 Lange Voorhout. At Us In The Residence had a guided tour by Tim Nederlof, pictured right (31), middle descendant of the family. "There will be a large terrace made of teak that we will bring over from our own Brazilian plantation, and along that big, white wall we will create a vertical garden. With built-in irrigation system indeed. I won't be coming over with a watering can myself."

Ted's All Day Brunch

Actually, they wanted to Sanne Huisman (37) and her husband open a boutique hotel on the Floral Riviera in Liguria, but when her husband said, 'Rather in about three years,' she started her own eatery Ted's All Day Brunch. Teds is named after her now deceased French bulldog. In each business - she now has four - a picture of the dog with his still-living brother Frenkie hangs framed on the wall. "When I wrote a business plan, Teds was my working title. I kept it that way. Nice and short and sweet."

From co-owner Jacco Helmink (39) the employees of Max Health Club have a say in the future of the company. As a result, Helmink has recently been banned from standing behind the bar. "Why? Because then everyone wants to chat with me and then it doesn't progress very much. But maybe also because I'm not quick enough with the coffee anymore."

Say Simonis, you say fish. A total of seven fish shops and seafood restaurants scattered across the city carry this now familiar catering name. Alain Simonis (36), who sways the restaurants Encore and Catch, is the creator of the successful music events on the Second Harbour. "To my wife the other day I said, 'I'm like a booking agency'," he says.

Already in the morning, the first curious folks at Atelier Camp & Co in. Many visitors also come from outside The Hague. "Especially through Instagram, people know how to find us," says owner Iris Camp (32, pictured right) to At Us In The Residence. Together with her colleague, she mainly crafts handmade jewellery on commission. "I estimate that about eighty per cent of jewellers outsource diamond setting these days. Here, we do everything in-house."

Anchorwoman Annechien Steenhuizen, culinary expert Janny van der Heijden and comic book heroine Jans Tromp, all these tough women fall in love with the graphic designs and bold use of colour by fashion designer Michael Barnaart (36). Editor-in-chief Annerieke Simeone of Bij Ons In De Residentie is also a fan. "The world is dominated by grey suits, so it is important to show colour and step out of the crowd. Plain can always be done."

Under the name Colour the Hagenaar recently launched a series of coffee and side tables at the Rotterdam design fair OBJECT that he can supply in any RAL colour. Vellekoop hopes buyers will eventually pass them on to their own children. "I notice that people like to last longer with things," he says.

As a 19-year-old boy, he ran Lars Temmink (32) the exclusive home furnishing shop Byron & Jones in for the first time. He made it from intern to owner. His mission ('advising clients on their home and office furnishings') has remained the same, but in recent years he sees that standardisation has given way to custom-made design and layout. "I think it suits the current demand of our customers," he says.
